High-Dose Vitamin D

Compounded vitamin D for deficiency and replacement protocols.

What it does

What High-Dose Vitamin D is and why doctors prescribe it.

Vitamin D (cholecalciferol or ergocalciferol) is a fat-soluble vitamin and pro-hormone. Doctors prescribe high-strength compounded preparations for deficiency repletion, as part of bone-health protocols, and in the context of the broader metabolic-health workup.

How it works

Mechanism in plain English.

Vitamin D is hydroxylated in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D and then in the kidney to active 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (calcitriol), which binds the vitamin D receptor and regulates calcium homeostasis, bone mineralization, immune modulation, and many other pathways.

How long it's been studied

Research history.

Vitamin D was characterized in the 1920s-30s as the anti-rachitic factor. Modern research includes large randomized trials (VITAL, 2018) and decades of observational and mechanistic work. Compounded high-dose vitamin D is dispensed under 503A.

Dosing

Clinical context for the prescribing doctor.

Doctor-prescribed and lab-monitored. Compounded vitamin D is dispensed in oral capsule strengths from 5,000 IU daily up to 50,000 IU weekly for deficiency repletion. Your doctor monitors 25(OH)D levels and adjusts. Injectable D is used in select malabsorption contexts.

This page is informational, not a dispensing aid. High-Dose Vitamin D is dispensed only on a patient-specific prescription written by a licensed doctor for an identified patient. Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved and should not be evaluated using branded-drug trial data. Availability varies by state and prescribed medication.
