Topical Tretinoin

Retinoid for acne, photo-aging, and select dermatologic conditions.

What it does

What Topical Tretinoin is and why doctors prescribe it.

Tretinoin (all-trans retinoic acid) is a topical retinoid with FDA approval for acne and photo-damage. Compounded tretinoin lets the prescribing doctor customize strength (often more granular than the manufactured supply) and combine with other topical agents (hydroquinone, kojic acid, niacinamide) for tailored protocols.

How it works

Mechanism in plain English.

Tretinoin binds retinoic acid receptors in skin cells, regulating gene expression that controls cell turnover, collagen synthesis, and pigmentation. Effects include reduced comedone formation, increased epidermal turnover, and over time, smoother skin texture and reduced fine lines.

How long it's been studied

Research history.

Tretinoin received FDA approval in 1971 for acne. Photo-aging indication followed in 1995. Compounded tretinoin combinations have been used in dermatology for decades.

Dosing

Clinical context for the prescribing doctor.

Doctor-prescribed. Compounded tretinoin is typically dispensed at strengths from 0.025% to 0.1%, applied at night to clean dry skin. Your doctor selects strength based on skin type, condition, and tolerance, and titrates frequency to manage irritation.

This page is informational, not a dispensing aid. Topical Tretinoin is dispensed only on a patient-specific prescription written by a licensed doctor for an identified patient. Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved and should not be evaluated using branded-drug trial data. Availability varies by state and prescribed medication.
